Core Memories: Hector Viramontes

We believe the origin of our work as creators is important to consider and hold. In CORE MEMORIES, we ask artists and writers about their own creative beginnings. What led them to operate in their genre of choice? Was it a specific moment, an errant thought, a movement? Was it an insight, a person, a place? Years into their work, does it continue to resonate?

In this edition, we interview Hector Viramontes.

Hector Viramontes, known under the pseudonym loosebrain, is a Phoenix based artist whose work explores the subconscious connection between emotion and abstraction. Inspired by abstract expressionism, he uses this style's looseness and gestural nature to convey raw emotion and communicate his personal experiences with life, death, and everything in between. Hector continues studying the human experience and hopes to manifest a body work contributing to the new wave. You can find him at @_loosebrain_ and belhaus.co/loosebrain.

What is your CORE MEMORY?

As soon as I saw the work of Jean Michel Basquiat, I realized that I was meant to be in the art world. My decision to create visual work and venture into the world of art was inspired by his confidence and demeanor. In spite of the difficulty of the decision, the work and process satisfied the part of me that contributed to my overall happiness.

How has that moment impacted your current work or current artistic practice?

That moment experienced many years ago influences my work today because it reminds me not to take myself too seriously and always keep the work loose. Gestural brush strokes and a heavy-handed approach allow me to channel the closest connection to my subconscious when producing my work. Abstract expressionists heavily influenced Basquiat, and I’ve also ventured into similar territory when exploring other art and inspiration. The work is manifested after weeks of letting the natural process occur.

Are there any new projects you’re working on?

I am working on curating a show of various artists, both in visual art and apparel, as well as on a solo exhibition this spring. I am also working on a few collaboration projects and am excited to share that work with the world soon.
