F.A.R (Future Arts Research) Event
On Friday October 10 at 7 PM in Neeb Hall on the ASU Tempe campus, F.A.R will be hosting the event: "Murakami's Monsters: The Japanese Contemporary Art Explosion" with speaker Dick Hebdige. From F.A.R's newsletter:
"“I believe the time has come to return art to the hands of the monsters, who were here before humans”. Takashi Murakami
In the wake of the first survery of his work in 2007 at LA's Museum of Contemporary Art, this talk looks at the impact of the work of Japanese 'Business Art' phenomenon, Takashi Murakami on the 21st century art-and-mediascape with reference to the Japanese otaku (computer nerd) subculture, the Japanese digital dreamscape (anime, comics, horror films), 'pornetration' (the penetration of the public sphere by pornography via the internet) and what Hebdige argues is an emergent passive-aggressive sensibility he dubs 'sado-cute', the defining tactic of which is the tease: the simultaneously calculated stimulation and baffling of desire."
