“Behind Bars” by Vianca Gray
Artist Statement
This self-portrait marks the fifth in an ongoing series—a visual diary of my personal evolution.
Each self-portrait in this series has been a step toward understanding and rediscovering who I am. This latest piece is quieter, more deliberate. Her face is sectioned and spliced back together. Picking and choosing which sides of herself to show and more importantly, which parts to hide. She demonstrates restraint and forces a boundary between herself and the audience.
