body language

We’re thrilled to share our fall 2021 web series, BODY LANGUAGE. For this series, we sought out work that engages the way we think, talk, write, and create with an awareness of our bodies as active participants. This series was inspired by Calamities by Renee Gladman, in particular Gladman’s notion of writing as “the story of the body in thought.” Thinking about writing as the story of the body in thought expanded our view of the role of the body in art making, and inspired us to seek out other writing centered on this idea.

Each piece is accompanied by artwork by Graceina Samosir, a visual artist based in Ottawa, Canada. She uses a “combination of painterly, gestural, and graphic approaches to drawing…to convey her world in a raw manner, underpinning the significance of internal monologues, honesty, transparency, vulnerability, and embracing the malleability of the process.” Learn more about Graceina and support her work here.
