Me and My Fish by Kirsti Abrahamsen

Collage of a person in a coat holding a goldfish by the ocean with a surrealist eyeball in place of their head.

Artist Statement:

Collages is kind of the hip hop of art, we sample and mix from all kind of media. But of course it’s the mix that is unique for everyone and for me it’s a way to sort my mind and make sense of my life. Collages are like a dream where you put all your experiences in to create a new mix-upyou wake up, thinking, “what the hell?” or “this makes perfect sense.” They’re similar to my day’s input, mixed with things that I like, but also political thoughts and the need to process or try things together. So it’s a re-mix of cultural symbols that make new visual worlds to help sort my mind. But at the same time it’s making new expressions that other people can culturally interpret.
